Suicides of convicts
Reports of unjustified disciplinary punishments of convicts do not cease. As before, they are difficult to verify. If, under Article 110 of the Criminal Executive Code, a convict has the right to a meeting with a lawyer for the provision of legal assistance, then under Part 11 of Article 143, they are deprived of this right in the event of a penalty being imposed. Similarly, they are deprived of the opportunity for visits with relatives. It is precisely the deprivation of visits with parents that is claimed to have been the cause of the suicide of the convict Oleksandr Sosnovsky, who was held in Temnivska Correctional Colony No. 100. He hanged himself. The Prosecutor's Office is working in the colony. And here is another report: as if for some fault of the convicts, patients with tuberculosis who were in one unit were dispersed to other units, although this is strictly prohibited. We are unable to verify this information for the same reason: all visits with those who have received a penalty for committing a violation are prohibited.
Another report about the suicide of a convict, K., born in 1980, arrived yesterday from Chernivtsi. The causes are being ascertained.
