Escape from the colony
On the afternoon of 2 April, a convict escaped from the Belozerska Penal Colony No. 105. He was apprehended in Simferopol a day later. According to the head of the department, Major General Volodymyr Pinkas, the 20-year-old prisoner was in the social rehabilitation unit and could have been released in the near future. He was sentenced to 3 years and 1 month at the beginning of January 2008 and was positively characterised by the institution’s administration.
The escapee reached Simferopol by taxi, which he called by phone and paid the driver in cash. At the same time, it is still unknown where he got the phone and the money, since it is prohibited to possess means of communication and cash money in the colony. The motives for the prisoner’s escape are also still unknown. Incidentally, upon apprehension, officers offered him the chance to surrender, but the escapee refused and offered resistance.
‘The case is currently being investigated by the prosecutor’s office. The convict may receive a new sentence — from 3 to 5 years — and will be transferred first to a pre-trial detention centre and then to a maximum-security colony,’ explained V. Pinkas. This is not the young man’s first escape. The previous one was committed 2 years ago, also from a Kherson colony.
Now the guy will have to not only serve the full 2 years of his previous sentence, but another 3 years of imprisonment may be added to this term.
