Detainee dies in hospital after being brutally beaten in Kirovohrad pre-trial detention centre

Tonight, 22-year-old Anatolii LEVCHUN, who was brutally beaten in the Kirovohrad pre-trial detention centre, died in the hospital.
This was reported to UNIAN by the Vinnytsia Human Rights Group.
According to the Vinnytsia human rights defenders, on 8 April, A. LEVCHUN was placed in the Kirovohrad Pre-Trial Detention Centre of the State Department of Ukraine for the Execution of Sentences in satisfactory condition.
On 29 May, the Vinnytsia Human Rights Group reported that the detainee was in the intensive care unit of Kirovohrad Hospital No. 1 in critical condition, with traces of obvious abuse and beatings on his body.
“Unfortunately, after our appeal, we did not hear any prompt reaction either from the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine, which cynically claims to be fighting torture effectively, or from the Secretariat of the Human Rights Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine... In the event that it is impossible to bring those guilty of Anatolii’s death to justice in Ukraine, the Vinnytsia Human Rights Group will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights,” stated Dmytro HROISMAN, coordinator of the Vinnytsia Human Rights Group.
The Vinnytsia Human Rights Group calls on the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to urgently send a commission to Kirovohrad to study the state and quality of medical care provision in the Kirovohrad pre-trial detention centre.
