Colony chief held accountable for illegal exploitation of prisoner labour
Prisoners. Prosecutor's Office. Bashkiria. The head of a Bashkir colony, Aleksandr Smiyan, has been found guilty of “abuse of office” for the illegal exploitation of prisoner labour for personal gain.
“It was established that Aleksandr Smiyan, while holding the position of head of the indicated correctional institution, gave illegal orders to the colony driver to transport convicts to his summer cottage in the ‘Zemlyanichnaya Polyana’ gardening partnership in the Kirovsky district of Ufa for construction and household work.
The colony chief, now a former one, has been found guilty and sentenced to two years of imprisonment, suspended, with a two-year probation period,” notes the publication on the Prosecutor General's Office website.
The Prosecutor's Office of the Kirovsky district of Ufa deemed the sentence too lenient and intends to file a cassation appeal with the judicial panel for criminal cases of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
