Shelter for convicts burned down
This rehabilitation centre has existed since 1998 without a single kopeck from the state, solely thanks to the initiative of two people.
Journalist Ihor Hnat, known to many, maintained this Centre and provided an opportunity to live and reintegrate into society for people who had lost hope, using funds he received from filming material about how he rescued Ukrainian girls from sexual slavery abroad.
This spring, he refused to admit to the Shelter a released convict who repeatedly came drunk and said that he wanted to establish a life in the Shelter ‘according to the concepts’ (criminal subculture rules) and become the leader. After the refusal, this released convict burned down the building where the canteen, warehouse, and medical unit were located in the spring.
Together, we found the funds and restored the operation of these premises, and the Shelter began working again.
But, on the night of 18 November, this ‘individual’ broke a window in the wooden dormitory where 20 people were sleeping and set the building on fire. The firefighters could not save anything, and now 20 people, who have already paid their debt to society and served their term of punishment and are doing everything to be like you and me, are left in an unfinished building, without means of existence, support, and are once again alone.
The two people who held this Shelter on their shoulders are in need of immediate medical treatment after the fire. The ‘individual’ who committed the arsons has not been detained by the police, and it is possible that this ‘individual’ has other intentions known only to themselves.
Together, we will appeal to state bodies for help and hope that it will arrive, but given that we have been knocking on every ‘state’ door in vain for three years in a row, we understand that God willing, if help does come, it will not be soon.
Helping children’s homes is important, understandable, and necessary. But helping people who once stumbled and committed a crime — not to judge them — is also a great value.
A real request to everyone who can: help, but not for PR, not for coverage in the media, not before the elections.
Perhaps now there will not be time to write lists, or certificates, or letters of gratitude to those who help, and your name, perhaps, will never be remembered. But the Shelter has no other way out.
We will not write anything more — everything is clear as it is.
