Kryvyi Rih Penal Colony (No. 80)
The state institution ‘Kryvyi Rih Penal Colony (No. 80)’ is a medium-security institution for holding men convicted for the first time to imprisonment for a specific term. The institution is located in the city of Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk region, and is part of the structure of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine.
The history of the institution dates back to January 1954, when, in accordance with an order of the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Ukrainian SSR, Camp Unit No. 80 was created on the territory of a former camp for prisoners of war on Postysheva Street in the city of Kryvyi Rih. The primary task of the newly created institution was to ensure the execution of sentences and the organisation of the labour of convicts in the conditions of the post-war reconstruction of the industrial region.
Over the following years, the development of the material-technical base of the institution was carried out, new residential and production facilities were built, and the system of communal-domestic provision for convicts was improved. An important stage in the history of the colony was the completion in April 1961 of the construction of a new complex of main buildings. After its commissioning, the convicts were transferred to the new location where the institution is still situated today. In connection with the completion of the construction of the new complex and the reform of the system for the execution of sentences, Camp Unit No. 80 was renamed Kryvyi Rih Penal Colony No. 80. Subsequently, the institution developed consistently, conditions for the detention of convicts were improved, new production workshops were created, and opportunities for professional training and social adaptation of the persons serving sentences were expanded.
After the declaration of Ukraine’s independence, the colony became part of the structure of the national penitentiary system, and subsequently, it was transferred to the sphere of management of the State Department of Ukraine for the Execution of Sentences and the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine.
Today, the state institution ‘Kryvyi Rih Penal Colony (No. 80)’ continues to perform the functions assigned to it by the state regarding the execution of criminal sentences, ensuring proper conditions of detention for convicts, the organisation of their labour, professional training, and the conduct of socio-educational work aimed at their resocialisation and preparation for returning to society.
