Kryvyi Rih Detention Centre (No. 3)
The state institution ‘Kryvyi Rih Detention Centre (No. 3)’ is one of the largest penitentiary institutions in the Dnipropetrovsk region and performs the functions of a remand prison, ensuring the detention of persons taken into custody, as well as specific categories of convicts in accordance with the requirements of the criminal, criminal procedural, and penal enforcement legislation of Ukraine.
Until the beginning of the 1980s, only one remand prison functioned in the Dnipropetrovsk region, located in the city of Dnipropetrovsk. Due to an increase in the number of persons taken into custody and the mismatch between existing capacities and the needs of the region, a decision was made to build a new remand prison complex in the city of Kryvyi Rih with a design capacity of 1,000 persons, pursuant to an order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR dated 30 November 1979 and in accordance with the directive of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR dated 24 July 1981. On 1 August 1989, based on an order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine dated 28 July 1989, Remand Prison No. 2 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Executive Committee was opened in the city of Kryvyi Rih. The establishment of the institution became an important stage in the development of the region’s penitentiary system and allowed for significantly improved conditions for the detention of persons in custody.
After the declaration of Ukraine’s independence, the institution continued to function as part of the national penitentiary system.
In 1998, as a result of the creation of the State Department of Ukraine for the Execution of Sentences, it was transferred to the sphere of management of the newly created agency.
Subsequently, the institution became part of the structure of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine and the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine.
Today, the state institution ‘Kryvyi Rih Detention Centre (No. 3)’ is an important component of the justice system of the Dnipropetrovsk region and ensures the performance of functions assigned to it by the state regarding the detention of persons in custody, as well as specific categories of convicts.
