Kolomyia Correctional Colony (No. 41)
The state institution “Kolomyia Correctional Colony (No. 41)” is located in the village of Tovmachyk, Kolomyia District, Ivano-Frankivsk Region, and is one of the leading penal institutions in the region.
The history of the institution began on 1 September 1961, when a correctional labour facility named Enterprise p/o box YaA-128/41 was established on the site of the Tovmachyk Plywood Factory. The creation of the institution was linked to the development of the region's industrial base and the need to organise the labour of convicts at production facilities.
During the reform of the penitentiary system in December 1969, Enterprise p/o box YaA-128/41 was renamed Institution VI-304/41. The further development of the institution was accompanied by the expansion of residential, industrial, and utility infrastructure, as well as the creation of proper conditions for the confinement of convicts and the organisation of their labour and social-educational work.
In November 1999, in connection with the formation of the State Department of Ukraine for the Execution of Penalties and the reform of the criminal-executive system of Ukraine, the institution was renamed the State Institution “Kolomyia Correctional Colony (No. 41)”.
For many years, the colony has remained an important production and social complex, where significant attention is paid to the professional training of convicts, their employment, resocialisation, and preparation for their return to society.
A special place in the institution’s history belongs to the development of spiritual and educational activities. On 22 July 1994, the Church of Christ the Saviour was opened on the territory of the colony. This became a landmark event for the penitentiary system of Ukraine, as the church was one of the first religious objects created directly within the penal institutions of independent Ukraine. Its opening initiated systematic work to ensure the right of convicts to freedom of conscience and religion.
Over the years, the institution has been headed by A. Shokin, M. Obukhov, A. Akimov, V. Kotliarchuk, V. Horbach, V. Chysniuk, V. Danyshchuk, D. Futuluichuk, M. Kuziak, V. Sovtus, Ya. Boiko, and other directors who have made significant contributions to the development of the institution and the strengthening of its material and technical base.
The current head of the institution is Taras Mykolaiovych KATRYCH.
