Russia’s penal labour traditions
If a prisoner writes complaints or attempts to appeal against decisions in court, they are told: 'If you don’t stop, we will send you to such-and-such a colony, and you understand yourself what will happen to you there.' And the prisoner knows perfectly well that they can be beaten, raped, humiliated, or even killed in a torture zone. Such a reputation does not exist without reason.
